Unlike Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort is compact enough to walk everywhere important. The two parks share a single entrance esplanade. The three Disney-owned hotels are all within 5–15 minutes on foot. Downtown Disney sits between them.
That geography changes the trip. Midday resort breaks are easy. Dinner reservations off-park are painless. A family with young kids can head back for a nap and be at Sleeping Beauty Castle again by dusk — something that's much harder to pull off at Walt Disney World.
Everything important is a 5–15 minute walk. No property buses.
3–5 day trips are common — you can see both parks well.

The two parks
Disneyland Park
The original 1955 Disneyland. Sleeping Beauty Castle, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, a New Orleans Square that exists nowhere else, and layered detail long-time fans obsess over. Best experienced with unhurried mornings — the park rewards attention.
Disney California Adventure
Pixar Pier, Cars Land, Avengers Campus and more thrill rides — plus the World of Color water show at night. Often quieter than Disneyland Park and a great fit for older kids and families with mixed ages.
Where to stay
Three Disney-owned hotels sit inside the resort. Good Neighbor hotels on Harbor Boulevard trade some perks for a lower price and are still very walkable.
Disneyland Hotel
The classic resort hotel. Themed pools, evening character moments and monorail-adjacent access.
Pixar Place Hotel
The rebranded former Paradise Pier — bright, Pixar-inspired rooms and the shortest walk to DCA.
Grand Californian
The signature deluxe hotel with direct access into Disney California Adventure. Craftsman-style, quiet, premium.
Good Neighbor hotels
Disney designates a set of nearby hotels as "Good Neighbor" properties. They're not Disney-owned, but many sit within a 5–10 minute walk of the parks along Harbor Boulevard. Good Neighbor hotels typically cost meaningfully less than the three Disney hotels and are a common choice for families who want to spend the savings elsewhere in the trip.
Trade-offs: no Disney-hotel Early Entry benefit, no direct DCA access, and the atmosphere is a regular hotel rather than immersive theming. For a compact trip where you're at the parks most of the day, that trade is often worth it.
